Flash Photography Basics

1. Every flash photograph is two exposures in one.
2. Fill Flash can be used when subject is backlit or sidelit to eliminate silhouettes or shadows.
3. Flash exposure is not affected by shutter speed.
4. Flash illumination is dramatically affected by distance.
5. Your camera measures ambient light and flash illumination seperately.
6. With automatic flash metering, the flash illumination is measured after the shutter button is pressed, and the flash output is adjusted accordingly.
7. Every SLR camera with a mechanical shutter box has a maximum flash sync shutter speed.
8. Hash lighting, washed out subjects and red eye can be eliminated by using diffusers and light bouncing.
9. It is possible to change the order of when the flash fires using "rear curtain sync."
10. Removing the flash from the top of the camera helps eliminate red eye and unflattering shadows.

Which photo do you like best? Why?
The photo l like best is the first image.  I love the emotion and the fact that it tells a story. It also captured the action perfectly. I do think it might be a little grainy but it's a really good picture.

Which is your least favorite image? Why?
The third picture is my least favorite. It is very soft and blurry and the action isn't fully stopped. Also you cut their hands and feet off at a really weird length and they look awkward. You should've zoomed out a little.

Overall, make two positive statements about their pictures.
I think that your photos are awesome. The colors that show up in your pictures are very lively and beautiful, and that is very hard to achieve in the gym. Also, you're great at capturing emotion and that is very important.

Overall, what is one area that this person could improve upon in your opinion.
I think that you could work on stopping the action better. The pictures are a little soft and not as sharp as they can be.

Painting Reproduction

How well did they reproduce the painting? Look at colors, posing, lighting, props, spatial distance.
The painting was reproduced beautifully. The colors are spot on, the pose is similar, the props are creatively used to mimic the original wardrobe and the spatial distance is near perfect. Overall, his painting recreation is the best one i've seen.

Do you think the photographer did an acceptable job on recreating the image? What leads you to this analysis?
I think the photographer did an exceptional job recreating the painting. The factors that lead me to conclude that opinion are: the picture looks carefully planned, everything from the wardrobe to the lighting are evidence of effort, and you actually took the time to come into Reeves' and set up the studio.

If you think they didn't do the best job, what areas do they need to correct the next time? Do you think they should go shoot it again?
I think the photographer did the best job that they could considering the resources they had. I do not think it needs to be re shot.

Which photo do you like best? Why?
The planet photo is amazing. I think that you really captured the concept that we were going for. The image is very sharp and it looks very professional. I love the colors and the orbs that are on the side of it. I love how the "planet" is on the left side and the orbs balance it on the right side.
Which is your least favorite image? Why?
The mini people shot is my least favorite because I have no clue what is going on in it. I also think that the aperture is too low and you should've opened it up a little more so that the airplane was in focus too.

Overall, make two positive statements about their pictures.
I think that you are amazing at taking pictures. You really know what you're doing and that is evident through your shots. I love the sharpness and professionalism that is portrayed in your images.

Overall, what is one area that this person could improve upon in your opinion.
One area that you could improve on is editing a little more. For example, in the portrait of savannah the colors are kind of bland and I feel like you could've spent more time making that picture better like removing wrinkles from the backdrop and enhancing the colors.
